safety firstSafety Centre

This page contains links and information related to curling club safety.

Keeping our members and staff safe is important to the Board of Directors, so in the spring of 2020 we formed a Safety Committee. This committee was initially asked to bring our curling club into compliance with the Ontario government’s new concussion awareness protocols (Rowan’s Law). Their mission now is to promote awareness and education on all aspects of curling safety.

Emergency procedures

First Aid kits

Our Club has four first aid kits, located at the three Safety Centres and on a wall in the kitchen. The Safety Committee monitors and re-equips them on a regular basis.

Defibrillator (AED kits)

In case of suspected heart attack, access the Zoll Plus AED kits located at the Safety Centre in the ice level landing of the West Staircase. Please familiarize yourself with how to use this device. Here are two resources to view:

Incident reporting

If a curler sustains an injury while at the club, on or off the ice, we ask the League Convenor or their designate to complete an incident report. You’ll find it in a binder at the bar.

Concussion awareness (Rowan’s law)

When you register to curl each year, we ask you to review the Concussion Awareness Resource and Code of Conduct. You can find these documents in the Membership section of this website.

Fire Safety

Volunteer Awards

Without our volunteers, our club would not be what it is today. We appreciate all of our volunteers and they all deserve our recognition and thanks for the hours of hard work they put into our club.

Two ways we have to show our appreciation for the hard work that goes into supporting the club are through the following awards. Click on the links to see the criteria for each award.

2 of 2 - Concussion Awareness and Code of Conduct Acknowledgement

Rowan’s Law

Ontario passed Rowan’s Law (Concussion Safety), 2018 (“Rowan’s Law”) on March 7, 2018, making Ontario a national leader in concussion management and prevention. The Government of Ontario provides age-appropriate Concussion Awareness Resources which all athletes, their parents or guardians (if the athlete is under 18 years of age), and all coaches, team trainers and officials must review once a year.

This form is intended to provide confirmation that a Concussion Awareness Resourcehas been reviewed within the last 12 months.

In order to participate in the activities of the Elmira & District Curling Club (“EDCC”), this form must be signed and submitted to EDCC when registering.

Concussion Code of Conduct

As part of the requirements under Rowan’s Law, sport organizations, including curling clubs, are required to establish a Concussion Code of Conduct that sets out rules of behaviour to support concussion prevention. Curlers and their parents or guardians (if the curler is under 18 years of age) must review and sign the Concussion Code of Conduct once a year before registration and submit this signed form to the Elmira & District Curling Club.

I will help prevent concussions by:

  • Wearing the proper equipment for my sport and wearing it correctly.
  • Developing my skills so that I can participate to the best of my ability.
  • Respecting the rules of curling.
  • My commitment to fair play and respect for all (respecting other curlers, coaches, team trainers and officials).

I will care for my health and safety by taking concussions seriously, and I understand that:

  • A concussion is a brain injury that can have both short- and long-term effects.
  • A blow to my head, face or neck, or a blow to the body that causes the brain to move around inside the skull may cause a concussion.
  • I don’t need to lose consciousness to have had a concussion.
  • I have a commitment to concussion recognition and reporting, including self-reporting of possible concussion and reporting to a designated person if I suspect that a fellow curler may have sustained a concussion.
  • Continuing to participate in further training, practice or competition with a possible concussion increases my risk of more severe, longer lasting symptoms, and increases my risk of other injuries.

I will not hide concussion symptoms. I will speak up for myself and others.

  • I will not hide my symptoms. I will tell a coach, official, team trainer, parent or another adult I trust if I experience any symptoms of concussion.
  • If someone else tells me about concussion symptoms they are experiencing, or I see signs they might have a concussion, I will tell a coach, official, team trainer, parent or another adult I trust so that they can help.
  • I understand that if I have a suspected concussion, I will be removed from sport and that I will not be able to return to training, practice or competition until I undergo a medical assessment.
  • I have a commitment to sharing any pertinent information regarding incidents of removal from sport with the curler’s school and any other sport organization with which the curler has registered.

I will take the time I need to recover, because it is important for my health.

  • I understand my commitment to supporting the return-to-sport process.
  • I understand I will have to be medically cleared by a medical doctor or nurse practitioner before returning to training, practice or competition.
  • I will respect my coaches, team trainers, parents, health-care professionals, and medical doctors and nurse practitioners, regarding my health and safety.

Acknowledgment of Review

I confirm that I have reviewed a Concussion Awareness Resource and acknowledge that I have fully reviewed and commit to the Concussion Code of Conduct for Curlers & Parents, and (if applicable) for Coaches and Trainers.

Code of Conduct

The following Code of Conduct applies to all members, staff and guests of the Elmira Curling Club in the building or on the property:

Infractions to the following Code of Conduct will be assessed by the Board of Directors and the more serious infractions could result in cancellation of membership privileges or other disciplinary action with or without a refund of fees:

  • Any conduct considered threatening or harrassing or that could threaten the physical or emotional safety of the individual exhibiting the behaviour or others will not be tolerated.
  • Foul or abusive language will not be used at any time.
  • Intoxication will not be tolerated. Bar tenders are expected to refuse service to anyone who exhibits behaviour that would suggest the person is intoxicated.
  • Inappropriate expressions of anger are not acceptable.
  • Any conduct that could result in damage to the property of the Elmira Curling Club is unacceptable.
  • Members, staff and guests are expected to know and follow the safety guidelines as posted in the club.

Curling Etiquette - "Sportsmanship, Courtesy, Respect for Others"

Please follow these general rules of etiquette:

1)  A curling game starts and ends with handshakes or elbow bumps (during the Covid-19 pandemic, a smile and nod is sufficient). Introduce yourself at the start of the game and wish "Good Curling" to your opponents.

2)  To keep our ice as clean and damage free as possible:

  • Clean your shoes using the boot cleaner every time you enter the rink.
  • Replace worn grippers regularly.
  • Wear appropriate and clean footwear.
  • Do not place your hands on the ice.
  • Do not kneel or lie on the ice.
  • Clean your broom head regularly each game over a garbage receptacle (if brushes are available for this purpose).
  • Do not pick up the rock, unless you still use a backswing delivery.

3)  To keep the game on time:

  • Be ready to deliver your rock when it's your turn.
  • Front-end players should get the skip's rock ready while the skip and vice are discussing the shot.

4)  Leads and seconds should stand on the sideline, between the hoglines unless it is their team's shot. Skips and vices should stand still and behind the backline when the opponents are shooting (OCA Rule).

5)  The throwing team is responsible for catching deflecting rocks (i.e. sweepers), but the opposing skip or vice can help.

6)  Only handle your own team's rocks (do not set out rocks for your opponent).

7)  Swearing and banging your broom at any time during the game is inappropriate. It disrupts other games.

8)  Do not celebrate your opponent's missed shots.

9)  Traditionally, the winning team buys a drink for the opposition and then the opposition returns the favour. Note: During the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions, we ask that each person staying after the game buy their own drink.

10)  If you cannot attend a game, you should arrange a spare and notify your skip.

 Rookie League - March 2015

I've learned to curl - what are the next steps?

Your next step after learning to curl would be to join one of our leagues.  We offer many different leagues to suit all schedules and abilities.  Entry into our leagues is membership based, which means you join the club as a member and then you can select the leagues you would like to play in.   Here is a brief summary - for more information on any of our leagues, go to our leagues page.

Novice Leagues

Our Thursday Novice Social league and Friday TGIF Open Team (6-ends) league were specifically created to provide new curlers with fun leagues where you can compete with people of similar ability.

Social Leagues

Social leagues are a great way for new curlers to get started.  It's individual sign up and teams are created by the organizer.   A few times a year the teams are mixed up so you can meet and play with different people.  We have both daytime and evening social leagues.

Team Entry Leagues

For this type of league, you sign up as a team and you stick together for the season.   In some cases entry into a team league would require at least one experienced curler to skip.   Although some of our team leagues tend to be a little more competitive, we have many new curlers playing the front end positions on competitive teams.  Sometimes teams are looking for extra players so we can help you get set up.

Spare List

Every week there are teams in need of fill-in players, so putting yourself on one or more spare lists is a great way to play with different teams and learn a lot about the game.  All teams welcome new players and there is no stigma attached to being a new curler.

Please contact our This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and we'll help you get started!

How Do I Get Started in Curling?

So you want to give curling a try, but aren't sure how to get started?  Have no fear - we are here to help!

Learn to Curl Program (Curling 101)

Our popular 6 week learn to curl program is an ideal way to get introduced to the sport.  The first 4 weeks features curling instruction from certified coaches.  The last 2 weeks is dedicated to playing practice games, with instructors providing assistance.  For more information, check out our Curling 101 page.

Try Curling Clinics

A few times per season we will offer a 2 hour Try Curling Clinic.  This clinic teaches the basics of the curling delivery – focusing on balance, correct timing and grips, turns and releases. Introductory sweeping instruction is included.

Keep an eye on our website for upcoming dates.

Rentals

You can get some friends together and rent ice at our facility.  For a reasonable rate we will provide an instructor and all the equipment you need.  Sessions are scheduled based on ice availability.  For more information, or to book a session,  contact our This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Do I need equipment?

All you need to get started is a clean pair of running shoes and comfortable, loose-fitting pants.  A helmet is strongly recommended.  We have a supply of slip-on sliders and brooms that you can use while you are learning - how awesome is that?!

Curling is a sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities.  Give it a try!

So you want to give curling a try?   You've found the right place!   This course is modelled after Curling Canada's Getting Started for Adults program.   The goal is for novice curlers to get progressively better through continued weekly instruction and skill development.

When:  The course runs on Saturday mornings from 9:30am to 11:30am for six weeks.  The next session is planned for the Fall of 2026

Intended Audience:  The program is intended for adults of all ages with little or no curling experience.   It is also ideal for novice curlers who would like to further develop their skills. The program is available to members and non-members.  For children and teens aged 7-18, check out our Junior Curling Program

Curriculum:  The first four weeks features learn-to-curl instruction from certified and trained instructors.   The main topics include: safety, three-step and seven-step delivery, grip and release, brushing, layout of a curling sheet, rules and etiquette, and basic strategy.   The last two weeks are devoted to playing practice games, overseen by instructors and experienced curlers.

Equipment:   A helmet or protective curling head band is mandatory for all participants.  The best option is a helmet that protects the back of your head (e.g. curling, skateboard, snowboard, or hockey helmet). You will also need a clean pair of running shoes (preferably not worn outside). Loose fitting pants and a warm sweater or jacket are recommended.  All other equipment is provided (slip-on sliders, grippers, and brooms).

Cost:  Non-members pay $150 plus HST. Participants that sign up for a winter membership after completing the course receive 50% off their membership fees. (Capital charge and Volunteer deposit still apply - see the Membership page for fees)  We accept credit and debit cards (Visa & MC) with online registrations.  Cash, cheque or Interac debit (at the club) are also available (please contact the organizer).

  • Start with a handshake. At the beginning of the game, greet the members of the opposing team with a handshake, tell them your name, and wish them “Good Curling”.
  • Finish with a handshake. When the game is over, offer each of the players a hearty handshake and move off the ice. The winning curlers traditionally offer their counterparts some refreshments.
  • Keep the ice clean. Change your shoes. Sand, grit and dirt are the ice’s worst enemy. The shoes you wear should only be used for curling. Keep them clean.
  • Compliment good shots, no matter which team makes them. Respect your opponent.
  • Be ready. Take your position in the hack as soon as your opponent has delivered his/her stone. Keep the game moving; delays detract from the sport. Be prepared to sweep as soon as your teammate releases the rock.
  • After delivering your stone, move to the side of the sheet between the “hog “ lines, unless you are the skip. Leads and seconds are not permitted in “house” or “rings”, except when sweeping or to remove the stones after the count has been determined by the vices.
  • Be courteous. Don’t distract your opponent in the hack. Sweepers should stay on the sidelines between the hog lines when not sweeping.
  • Place your skip’s rock in front of the hack to help speed up the game.
  • All games on the ice should run approximately the same time. Therefore, if your game is an end or two behind all other games you should pick up the pace. Each player should be ready to deliver their rock when their skip puts down the broom.
